Supplies
-fabric scraps
-fusible fleece
-scrap medium weight interfacing
-3" piece of velcro (hook and loop)
-jumbo ric rac
-sewing machine
-thread, scissors and iron
-rotary cutter and mat (optional)
Cut (1) 6 ½” x 8 ½” exterior fabric
Cut (1) 6 ½” x 8 ½” interior fabric
Cut (2) 6 ¼” x 8 ¼” fusible fleece (one for interior and
exterior pieces)
Cut (2) 4” x 4” pieces of fabric which will be your flap
Cut (2) 3 ¾” x 3 ¾” pieces fusible fleece
Cut (1) 6 ½” x 8 ½” heavyweight interfacing
Cut (2) 7” ric rac
Iron fusible fleece on to the backside of both of your flap
pieces (4” x 4” pieces).
Place them right sides together and sew where indicated.
Clip corners and then turn inside out. Press and then
topstitch as shown in pic below.
Place one of your 3” pieces of Velcro about ½” down from the top of the flap on the
interior side. Sew in place and then set your flap aside.
Iron both pieces of fusible fleece onto the backside of your
interior and exterior pieces just like you did for the flap.
Place ric rac on each end of interior piece 2” in as shown
below. Pin down in the middle to hold in place. Make sure to keep the pins out
of the seam allowance.
Now let’s make a sandwich. Place your
interfacing down on your workspace. Then place your exterior case piece right
side up. Then your flap piece with the Velcro facing up.
And finally, lay your interior case piece right side down. Pin
in place.
Mark a 3” opening on
the side of your case. Sew from one mark
to the other backstitching at the beginning and end.
Clip corners. Then reach in and pull out the pins you used
to secure the ric rac. Pull the inside out through the opening. I’m not going
to lie, this part sucked!
Push corners out, then straighten and iron….A LOT! :)
Once, it's flat and looks nice, sew all the way around 1/8” from the edge closing the
opening as you go.
Fold your case in half, letting the flap come over the top. While still holding the flap down, lift it enough to place your other piece of velcro where it needs to go. Pin the velcro in place.
Now, turn it over and flip the ric rac over and pin it out of the way like in the picture below.
Turn it back over once again and sew the velcro in place. Then unpin and flatten the ric rac.
ALL DONE!
Let's see what it looks like all filled up, shall we?!
